The 2021 South African vintage received an excellent score of 94 points from Robert Parker. The wines from this year are of outstanding quality, although they may currently still be a bit youthful and tannic.

Excelsior Paddock Shiraz, a Shiraz is a must-have in any South African wine selection! This special Shiraz, called Paddock Shiraz, takes its name from the old Horse Paddocks. The vines for the Shiraz were planted in the old pastures where the De Wet family's horses used to graze. In 1859, Jacobus de Wet started a horse breeding farm called Excelsior. Besides his passion for horses, he also had a passion for wine, which led him to plant grape vines on vacant land.

Today, the fifth generation of the de Wet family is at the helm, and they still produce beautiful wines driven by Jacobus de Wet's passion. Unfortunately, the breeding of racehorses ceased in 2000 to fully focus on winemaking. Of course, everything on the estate still evokes the days when horses were a part of the family's daily life. The winery has even built several beautiful lodges so guests can stay on the magnificent, expansive estate. We can assure you that it's definitely worth a visit and an overnight stay!

Even more important is how this wine translates into flavors! The color is deep dark red, almost black. On the nose, this red wine is a true Shiraz! Beautiful aromas of black fruit, spices, and chocolate, and because 30% of the wine was aged in oak barrels for eight months, a delicious note of vanilla and light oak. The palate is full and powerful, another true Shiraz! Delicate nuances of black fruit, licorice, dark chocolate, spices, and a soft vanilla undertone. The finish is warm and thick with pleasant tannins, just like we expect from a Shiraz wine.
