92 out of 100 Parker points! What a magnificent wine! This Le Serre Nuove from the dell Ornellaia winery! It's a wine of great aromatic complexity, made from 26 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 14 percent Cabernet Franc, 54 percent Merlot, and 6 percent Petit Verdot. The result is a very elegant wine with excellent aging potential. It does require some patience, but it's more than worth it.
Italian top wines from Ornellaia
Ornellaia is located on the Tuscan coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the Northern Maremma region between Livorno and the island of Elba. The vineyards extend across two adjacent areas separated by Bolgheri's famous Cypress Avenue. There are 99 hectares of vineyards in total, 41 surrounding the Tenuta and the remaining 58 in an area known as Bellaria, which is closer to the sea. The vineyards are planted at altitudes ranging from 50 to 120 meters above sea level.
The clusters are hand-picked and then hand-selected on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, and finally gently crushed. Since 2016, optical sorting has been introduced alongside manual selection to further enhance the quality of the selection. Each varietal and plot is vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel at temperatures between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius for two weeks, followed by maceration for approximately 10 to 15 days. Malolactic fermentation begins in stainless steel and is completed after transfer to barrels (25% new and 75% one-year-old). The wine remains in Ornellaia's temperature-controlled cellar for a further 15 months. After the first 12 months, it is assembled and then returned to barrels for another three months. After bottling, it is aged for a further six months before release.
The result after long barrel maturation
But after all the long wait, we are finally rewarded with this Le Serre Nuove dell Ornellaia. The aroma of this wine reveals roasted fruit, herbs, and hints of mint. The wine is aged for 17 months in French oak barriques, 25% of which are new. Le Serre Nuove is Tenuta Ornellaia's second wine, and this wine is a true gem! The flavors reveal hints of herbs, black fruit, vanilla, wood, tobacco, leather, plums, and much more...
