Muscle 21 Gables Pinotage Stellenbosch, South Africa

Spier 21 Gables Pinotage is a wine that demonstrates why Pinotage, once underestimated, is once again being taken seriously. This cuvée comes from Spier's iconic 21 Gables line and is intended as a tribute to the estate's more than 300 years of winemaking history, dating back to 1692. Cellar Master Johan Jordaan sees Pinotage as a grape with energy, layering, and excellent aging potential, and it is precisely this vision that forms the core of this wine. The style is deliberately refined and cool, with structure and length as guiding principles.

Vineyards and region

The grapes come from South Africa, from Stellenbosch, on the southern edge of the region overlooking False Bay. Planted in 2006, the vineyard is unusually close to the ocean, allowing cool sea breezes to moderate the temperatures. This ensures slow, even ripening and concentrated color development. The soil consists of weathered granite with a high clay content, which retains water well and largely eliminates the need for irrigation. Spier has worked here for generations and has deliberately selected these plots to allow Pinotage to express itself in a more elegant, fresh style.

Vinification and maturation

At harvest, the grapes were picked for flavor, focusing on soft tannins rather than maximum ripeness. The grapes were hand-harvested, pre-chilled, and rigorously sorted after destemming to ensure only perfectly ripe berries were used. Fermentation took place in ten separate batches to build complexity. Approximately 15% of the must fermented spontaneously, the remainder with selected yeasts. After fermentation, only free-run wine was used for aging. The wine matured for 18 months in a combination of French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels, approximately 60% of which were new, divided between first and second fills. This approach results in a Pinotage with depth, precision, and clear aging potential.

Grape composition

Pinotage – Stellenbosch
This wine is made from 100% Pinotage . Pinotage is a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, developed in 1925 by Professor Perold, and is considered South Africa's signature grape.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

The color is deep ruby red. The nose reveals violets, ripe blackberries, and cherries, with subtle notes of graphite and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and classic in style, with concentrated fruit, a dense structure, and velvety tannins. The finish is long and layered, with clear aging potential. Serve at 16–18°C. This wine pairs well with robust dishes such as lamb, game, or rich vegetable dishes with cheese.
