Nero d'Avola

Buy or order Nero d'Avola wine

You'll quickly fall in love with this red grape from Italy, namely the Nero d'Avola. It has its roots on the beautiful island of Sicily, where it's called "the black of Avola." This is due to the beautiful dark color of the red wines produced from the Nero d'Avola grape. Rosé wines are also often made from this grape because they are wonderfully refreshing and offer beautiful, deep flavors. Only since the beginning of this century have these wines been taken seriously on the international wine market. Thanks in part to the older vineyard and improved cultivation, top-quality wines are now being made from Nero d'Avola, such as the Cusumano Noa, Donnafugata Tancredi, and Paritala Alto Nero d'Avola. These wines are highly regarded by, among others, Robert Parker.

Nero d'Avola is found in warm areas

Nero d'Avola benefits greatly from a warm climate. The abundant sunshine ensures a mature grape. It's no wonder Nero d'Avola thrives on the island of Sicily. It has been found here since the early twentieth century, and at the time, it was used solely for its color and to enhance wine's aging potential. Today, things have changed, and top-notch wines are made from Nero d'Avola. Often, the leading wines are also aged in oak to enhance their fullness and power. Oak aging is highly beneficial to this indigenous grape and is praised by the international wine press.

What does a Nero d'Avola taste like?

So, what does a Nero d'Avola wine actually taste like? First, the dark red color is immediately noticeable. This is the hallmark of the Nero d'Avola grape. The aroma often offers notes of red cherries, ripe plums, pomegranate, and often a touch of spice. The taste is smooth and even smoother, with plenty of finesse thanks to the abundance of black fruit. On the back of the tongue, it often reveals nuances of tobacco, coffee, spices, and a touch of chocolate. If you have a wine aged in oak, you'll also find notes of cedar, vanilla, leather, and deep spices in your glass of Nero d'Avola wine.

What pairs best with a Nero d'Avola wine? It pairs perfectly with any cut of meat, such as steak or pork. This makes it the perfect gourmet or BBQ wine. But this wine also pairs well with dishes like pasta, stews, antipasti, and of course, a slice of pizza.
