France's largest wine region is Languedoc-Roussillon. Many people spend their holidays here, in the south of France. It is also known for its 235,000 hectares of vineyards. This makes it not only the largest wine region in France, but also in the world. Most wines from Languedoc-Roussillon are Vins de Pays, a designation created by several winegrowers. It is intended to protect certain regional products, preventing them from being copied. The most important AOC regions in Languedoc-Roussillon are Minervois, Corbieres, Fitou, Clairette du Languedoc, and Picpoul de Pinet.

The history of Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc-Roussillon has a rich history, having been brought to its attention by the Greeks 2,600 years ago. The Romans followed suit, expanding the area even further. Besides grapes, olives were also cultivated here, used to produce olive oil. In the following years, the region continued to grow, both in quality and quantity. Here too, phylloxera caused serious damage. By 1868, most of the vineyards had been destroyed. The reconstruction took a long time, and Languedoc-Roussillon was gradually rebuilt. The last 20 years, in particular, have been entirely dominated by restructuring. New grape varieties were planted in Languedoc-Roussillon, and the popularity of the region's wines increased significantly.

The grape varieties in Languedoc-Roussillon

The region is so vast that it cultivates a wide variety of grape varieties. Quality continues to improve, leading to many wines moving from IGP to AOP status. The region is also known for trendy wines, with winemakers focusing on creating unique labels and wines that quickly gain wide recognition. For this reason, you'll see many Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Grenache Blanc planted. Nevertheless, there's also plenty of room to experiment with lesser-known grape varieties like Clairette, Macabeo, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Muscat à petit grains blanc. Red grapes are also found in Languedoc-Roussillon, with significant Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Syrah plantations. Lesser-known red grapes like Carignan, Cinsault, and Mouverdre are also found.

Blended wines from Languedoc-Roussillon

The wide range of blended wines from Languedoc-Roussillon demonstrates the high level of experimentation. Take, for example, the Les Gites Cuvée Particuliere Rood. No fewer than four grape varieties are blended by the talented winemaker at Les Gites to create this fabulous red wine. Those who prefer white wines are advised to try the Paul Mas Le Blanc. Paul Mas has chosen to blend not four but six grape varieties for this wine. This results in a white wine with great power and suppleness. But the single-varietal wines are also definitely worth a try. Languedoc-Roussillon is synonymous with high-quality wines that, thanks to a Mediterranean climate, boast beautiful aromas.
