Burgenland

Order Burgenland wine

Near the border with Hungary, in eastern Austria, lies the Burgenland wine region. While Austria is primarily known for its diverse white wines, Burgenland also focuses on red grape varieties. The wines are already characterized by their freshness and fruitiness, but over the years, Burgenland's wineries have experimented extensively without abandoning their traditions.

The history of Burgenland

Burgenland boasts a rich history dating back to well before the Romans. Afterward, it was the church that further expanded winemaking in this region. Burgenland has only been part of Austria since 1921; before that, it was part of Hungary. And this is also reflected in the red wines. The combination of cultures, traditions, and languages is reflected in the winemaking. All in all, the region comprises approximately 19,000 vineyards, running in a narrow strip from north to south. The south of Burgenland primarily produces red wines, while the north focuses primarily on white grape varieties. The climate is almost uniform throughout the region. Days are full of sunshine and nights are cooler. A balanced climate ensures that the grapes ripen easily and evenly.

White and red wine from Burgenland

Without a good winemaker, of course, there can be no good wine. And so, Burgenland boasts many high-quality winemakers, with wineries primarily family-run. Climate, soil, and grape varieties are naturally key components of high-quality wine, but Burgenland demonstrates that attention to grape cultivation and harvesting is also essential. We offer fine wines from Tschida and Zantho, both showcasing what this region has to offer. For high-quality sweet wines, Tschida is always the right choice. The Beerenauslese Samling 88 clearly focuses on one grape variety: Scheurebe. Only top-quality grapes were used for this wonderfully elegant, single-varietal wine from Angerhof Tschida.

The Blaufränkisch grape variety

But the most common grape variety is the Blaufränkisch grape. Originating in the nineteenth century, the Burgenland soil structure lends an earthy character to red wines. Zweigelt is also frequently planted. The Zantho winery knows how to handle both. The Zantho Blaufrankisch is surprisingly juicy with a slight bite. Prepare to be surprised by its delicate bouquet and a flavor that will never tire you.
