Mendoza

Buy Mendoza wine

Argentina's most famous wine region is Mendoza. Located in the west of the country, this region accounts for a whopping 70 percent of the country's total wine production. At the highest point in the world, the beautiful rolling hills where the vineyards are found are the source of the wines. The grape variety that has truly found its place here is the Malbec. The wines have very ripe, round tannins with dark fruit flavors.

The popularity of Mendoza wines

The Mendoza wine region boasts a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Back then, the wine was primarily consumed locally. At the end of the 19th century, the road to great success began. A railway link was built between the wine region and the Argentine capital. This significantly simplified transport, which in turn increased demand and production. Until the 20th century, the focus was on the national market, and meeting demand was a major undertaking. For decades, the rest of the world has also been able to enjoy the increasingly high-quality wines from the Mendoza region.

The climate and terroir of Mendoza

The climate in Mendoza is quite unique. Because of its high altitude, the vineyards are protected by the peaks of the Andes. This shields them from rain, which makes the soil very dry. However, ample meltwater flows down from the mountains, which serves as an irrigation system. The soil consists of sand, clay, and gravel, which stores this moisture well and allows it to penetrate the soil. This makes the soil ideal for grapes. Wines from sandy soils are slightly lighter in flavor than those from clay soils. Because of this location, the grapes enjoy an abundance of sunshine. This often causes the grapes to ripen faster and lose their acidity. However, because Mendoza's high altitude cools considerably at night, the ripening process is slowed down, and the grapes still retain their refreshing acidity.

Wines from high Mendoza

Besides the well-known Malbec, which thrives in Mendoza, other well-known grape varieties are also planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Torrontes, Semillion, and Pinot Noir. Thanks to this versatility, several wineries also produce beautiful blends. A prime example is the Salentein Numina Gran Corte. A perfect example of craftsmanship from the winemakers at Bodega Salentein, in our opinion. You smell slightly sweet aromas, think ripe plums and berries. An elegant touch of vanilla makes the wine appealing on the nose. The palate is unforgettable. You'll taste soft tannins and a delicate palette of red fruit and sultry vanilla and oak notes. But of course, wines made solely from Malbec are also frequently seen. The Malbec wine from Alma Andina stands for powerful, full-bodied, and robust. The taste is full with soft ripe tannins, lots of black fruit and impressions of vanilla, licorice and tobacco.
