Buy or order Merlot wine

The Merlot grape has a rich history. Its origins lie in the Bordeaux region of France. Its name, Merlot, comes from the word "merle," which means blackbird in French. Long ago, this grape was considered inferior and lacked much personality. Because of this, other grape varieties were often chosen at the time. Merlot was used to soften the wine's harshness; its intense softness is its hallmark . It wasn't until Saint-Émilion and Pomerol discovered the grape and its beautiful qualities that it became a major force. Merlot has since become popular worldwide, and we can now enjoy the development of this red grape variety.

Where does Merlot grow?

This Merlot often thrives in a cooler climate, which is why it's often planted on the highest slopes or mountains. This allows the grape to ripen slowly and undisturbed for a long time, revealing its full potential. Its primary characteristics are softness, ripe tannins, and strength, provided it's allowed to grow in single clusters on a vine. This means that if you want to make a great wine, you need to prune the vineyard extensively. Today, we see a great many Merlot wines from all over the world. Major countries include France, Chile, South Africa, and the United States.

Merlot wine is a favorite of ours and many others, and has become one of the most popular wines. Not just the basic wines around five euros, but also the more expensive ones from Italy and South Africa, among other places. Merlot grapes mature well in oak barrels. This gives them a completely different personality, making them fuller and more powerful in flavor, without losing their softness and finesse. A nice characteristic, however, is the color of a Merlot wine, which is always purplish. This is simply because the skins don't release as much color as with other grape varieties.

Characteristics of a Merlot Wine

Large clusters are a hallmark of the magnificent Merlot grape. Given time, it matures fully and bursts with aromas and flavors. The palate often reveals the same impressions of raspberry, black cherry, stewed plums, and a touch of cedar, vanilla, and mocha. The flavor is always smooth yet powerful. This, of course, depends partly on the quality and whether the wine has been aged in oak. The flavor often reveals notes of blackcurrant fruit, vanilla, mocha, chocolate, and a touch of caramel.

So, what do we pair with a good glass of Merlot? Well, first of all, it's a wine that's perfectly suited for aperitifs. After all, everyone enjoys this wine, and it never gets old. But it also tastes delicious with meat, duck breast, lamb, and of course, a nice piece of cheese.
